Keep close to the water with these magnificent oceanfront paths. Featuring sweeping Pacific views, dramatic cliffside drops, and easy boardwalks, these hikes are perfect for soaking in the salt air and spotting offshore marine life.

Fiscalini Ranch Preserve Bluff Trail

While there are 17 distinct trails to choose from at this gorgeous oceanfront preserve, the Bluff Trail is by far the most popular. This well-maintained boardwalk path is perfect for families with little ones or those with mobility needs. You will be met with sweeping ocean views and dramatic cliffside drops. Local Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for whales in the distance as you stroll!

Distance: 0.9 Miles

Moonstone Beach Trail

Best enjoyed in the early morning or at sunset (due to a lack of shade), this iconic path leads you right beside the ocean over a mix of boardwalk sections and hard-packed dirt. It is a fantastic spot for your pup to sniff the wild coastal grasses and for you to spot elephant seals lounging on the shore.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 1.9 miles (Out-and-Back)

Harmony Headlands State Park Trail

Located just eleven minutes south of town, this is one of the most secluded and beautiful hikes in the area. The 784-acre preserved park features a simple path that winds past vibrant grasslands and a reflective lake before culminating in a stunning ocean overlook. (Note: Pets are not allowed on this trail.)

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 3 miles (Out-and-Back)

Leffingwell Landing (via Shamel Park)

Accessible via the Moonstone Beach boardwalk, this trail leads through lush Cypress groves down to the ocean, where you will find easy beach access and picnic tables. It is a phenomenal vantage point for spotting playful otters, shorebirds, and migrating gray whales in the winter.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 2 miles

Lampton Cliffs Park

If you are after a gentle, highly scenic stroll rather than a workout, this loop path is perfect. It is an exceptional spot for wildlife viewing; you may spot grazing deer in the meadow at dawn or dusk. Look for the stairs leading down to the rocky beach for excellent tide pool exploration at low tide!

Beyond the Beach

Forests & Unique Natural Wonders

Step away from the sand and explore Cambria’s incredibly diverse ecosystems. From rare native Monterey pine forests and hidden mountain waterfalls to magical butterfly migration spots, these trails offer a completely different kind of coastal magic.

Monarch Butterfly Observation Area (Trenton Trail & Meander Loop)

From October through early February, you can witness the incredible migration of the endangered Monarch Butterfly. Accessed via the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, this short loop provides designated observation areas where you can watch swarms of vibrant orange butterflies fill the bright blue sky.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 1.8 miles

Salmon Creek Trail

Located just three miles north of the Ragged Point Inn, this short but rewarding hike leads you straight to a spectacular 120-foot cascading waterfall tucked into the Santa Lucia Mountains. Best viewed after a good rain, the trail does require a brief, rocky scramble to reach the base of the falls. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed, as poison oak is common in the area.

Difficulty: Moderate (due to rocky scrambles)

Distance: 0.3 miles

Strawberry Canyon Trail

Did you know Cambria is home to one of the last remaining native Monterey pine forests in the world? Protected by Greenspace (a nonprofit land trust), this unique loop trail traverses a clearly marked path through soaring, fragrant trees before transitioning to open ocean views. It is perfect for those looking for a diverse landscape and a slightly more challenging route.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 1+ miles
